Flip Side-Seeing Things that Need to Be Cleaned

He will bless those who fear the Lord, Both small and great. May the Lord give you increase more and more, You and your children. Psalm 115:13-14 NKJV

After four years of overseeing my dad's care, because he has Parkinson's Disease, it was the Flip Side, when I had broken my heel and couldn't walk on it for about three months. During this time, I would see things that were accumulating dust or had become dirty.

God let me know that if I drew this to my caregiver's attention, it might make that person feel like I was complaining, when they were already doing so very much during my inability to clean. Although it wasn't always easy, it was better to sit on those observations and save my comments for something that was a 10 in importance to me.

Fortunately for me, Christ would remind me of this periodically when I was tempted to say something that may have come across as being critical or complaining. In the long run, what's a little dust when the tone of the house remains positive?

Since these are examples of how I've applied these Bible verses to my experience, they may not reflect the whole meaning of the verse.

Flip Side-Cleaning the Fridge

Return to your rest, O my soul, For the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. For You have delivered my soul from death, My eyes from tears, And my feet from falling. Psalm 116:7-8 NKJV

I realized as I got stronger, I would have to clean the fridge out to figure out what was in there and where it was. Fortunately for me, my husband bought the groceries, made the food, did the laundry as my broken foot healed. I was truly blessed, but needed to start taking on more responsibility now that I was starting to get stronger.

I sat a chair by the refrigerator and a bowl with water. Also, I had some somewhat flat rimmed boxes on a chair nearby, so I could set the food on them while I cleaned.

In addition to the fridge needing the cleaning after my being incapacitated the majority of six months during the healing process, it was beneficial to know what foods we had and put them in a somewhat orderly location. I should have paced how long I stood a little better, but other than that, things went pretty well. It felt good to have done something productive after all those months.

Flip Side-Trying to Regain Your Strength

Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good! for His mercy endures forever. Psalm 118:29 NKJV

I had been supervising my dad's care over the past four years. Now that I had my heel broken, it flipped everything upside down. Now, I was the one who was the caregivee. It was important to be prayerful about how Christ best wanted me to proceed in this capacity.

There were times when I had to practice particular exercises in the process of getting stronger, some at home and some at physical therapy. Sure, sometimes it hurt, but I had prayed for God to provide the right physical therapy team for me. I knew they wouldn't lead me wrong, so I tried to be open to doing the exercises they said.

The other part of this is being patient. It's easy to get frustrated because the healing process doesn't take place fast enough. Christ let me know early on that He would be with me through the healing process. When I would feel that things weren't moving fast enough, I would remember this and try to put the timing of my healing in Christ's very capable hands.

Since these are examples of how I've applied these Bible verses to my experience, they may not reflect the whole meaning of the verse.

The Flip Side-Physical Therapy

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, The fruit of the womb is a reward. Psalm 127:3 NKJV

Now, that I was put into an air cast, it was time to start putting an increasing amount of weight on my injured foot. The goal shared with me was to continue to keep adding weight until I no longer needed the walker. The only thing was, I had no idea of how to do it and the P.A. gave me no literature describing the process.

All I could think of was to watch YouTube videos of weight bearing on an injured foot using a walker. The videos for 25% & 50% weight bearing using a walker were very helpful, but there were none I could find for more than that. I started watching the weight bearing videos using crutches, which I finally determined was what I needed to do.

Well, I tried one crutch like the videos and realized one crutch, as they showed, left me too wobbly. I decided to try using two crutches the next night, but thought I'd be alright trying without someone there to spot me-Big Mistake! I took 1-2 steps with the crutches on my carpet and fell down on my injured foot. Fortunately, shortly before I started walking with the crutches, God had given me the instincts to add more air to my air cast, which might be why there was no further damage to my broken heel.

After examining the X-Ray the next week, the doctor wrote out  a referral for physical therapy. That's what I wanted all along, but didn't speak up for myself much earlier when I should have.

I prayed and asked Christ to give me the physical therapy team that would be best for my healing needs. What an answer to prayer! The wonderful physical therapy team helped move me forward to full weight bearing and walking, despite all my fears of falling. They are currently working to assist me with developing a more normal gait pattern. I have been very blessed!
