Flip Side-Realization I Don't Have Bionic Eyes

My son, if your heart is wise, My heart will rejoice-indeed, I myself; Yes, my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak right things. Proverbs 23:15-16 NKJV

I was sleeping in a recliner in the front room of family. That was because my broken heel kept me from being able to climb back up the stairs to the bedroom my family had planned on us using while we were visiting, until my somersault act on the stairs and my temporary cast!

I didn't want to disturb anyone as I hobbled to the bathroom at night. I didn't turn on the front room light, although I had been encouraged to do so. I thought I could see well enough with the night lights in the hallway to make it to the bathroom.

Earlier in the evening, I had shared the profound advice
I had gotten about throw rugs. Did I listen to my own advice? I wish I could say otherwise, but I didn't. Not only had I not turned on the front room light to see clearly, but in heading to the bathroom, I got the walker part way on top of the throw rugs and then tried to lean back and pick up the gloves. Not only did I forget that I didn't have Bionic Eyes to see in dark, but I also forgot I'm not a human pretzel either!

You guessed it! I landed on the floor in a heap! I was very blessed that I didn't do any further damage to my heel. I was just pretty shaken up! I have learned my lesson! I always turn the light on when I'm heading to the bathroom in the night. I think that sometimes I'm stubborn and don't always listen to the lessons God has for me until He opens my reluctant eyes!

The Flip Side-Movement

Our fathers trusted in You: They trusted, and You delivered them. Psalm 22:4 NKJV

Well, I had broken my heel while visiting family in another state and now I needed to figure out how to get to the bathroom. They had given me crutches in the ER, it wasn't a good fit for me at that time. Parts of my body were still pretty sore from the initial fall. Fortunately, my family had a walker I could use to get to the bathroom, which was really helpful.

Sometimes I feel like Christ has me need to use the bathroom every two hours as a means of getting the blood to circulate in my injured limb.

Hopping on one leg isn't ideal, but it worked! I wasn't to put any weight on my broken heel for three months or so. Unfortunately, the palms of my hands became raw with the impact of my hopping while holding the walker. A family member helped me brainstorm ideas and lent me his extra thick gloves to wear, which did the trick!

Having to go home soon, several family members helped check out options to get me a walker I could use for the flight. They found a used one at a Salvation Army that had no wheels, at my request. There had been a couple of times the walker wheels had skidded on the floor. Another family member picked it up for me. I am truly blessed to have all of this family support!

This has made me much more mindful that my attitude and actions needed to reflect my gratitude instead of focusing on complaining. This made me prayerfully contemplate my thoughts and actions throughout the healing process.

The Flip Side of Christian Caregiving

Now, I'm going to talk about the flip side of Christian Caregiving from a whole new point of view of the patient! I thought it should be called the caregivee, but I'm under the impression that's not right.

I was visiting family out of state and talking while I was going down the stairs-definitely not a smart move! Because I wasn't paying enough attention, I missed the fourth step and became airborn, landing on the floor. I tried to crawl to the couch while family helped me up on it and got an ice pack for me, because I was hoping it was nothing major.

I waited 30-40 minutes with the ice pack on and decided to try to put my shoe back on and try to walk. I found out very quickly that walking wasn't going to be possible and the Emergency Room was going to be on my morning schedule.

It turned out, I had broken my heel end the ER doctor put on a temporary cast. He told me that not only would I need to schedule an appointment with an Orthopedic Surgeon when
I got home, but I wouldn't be able to put any weight on my foot for several months. In one morning, I went from being a Christian Caregiver, but immediately became the caregivee (patient). I plan to share posts in the weeks to come from this new perspective while still trying to maintain a Christian focus.

Infections, Here, There and Everywhere!

Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old. Proverbs 23:22 NKJV

I don't know if my dad had a staff infection or what, but it seemed that Dad had infections here, there and everywhere! His eyes were goopy, his wouldn't wouldn't heal right and needed cleaning and new dressings often.

Fortunately for me, the kind staff at the group home tended to most of this. When I would go visit Dad, he wanted me to put the ointment into his eyes or tend to some of the more minor things, like washing his dentures. I have to remember it's difficult for my dad to ask others to help him. It doesn't always bother him as much when I'm assisting him, because daughters are supposed to help their Dad. It's written in the Daughters Handbook!!!!

Anyway, I had a cut it must have gotten infected from helping Dad. It started oozing, turned red around it, was warm to the touch and wouldn't heal. I showed it to my doctor and she had to prescribe some powerful antibiotic ointment for it. I never told my dad about my getting an infection from helping him, because he would have felt terrible. I did purchase some plastic gloves to use when I cleaned his dentures, etc. I feel so blessed to have this extra time with my dad, infections and all.
